General Location

Ocean Village & Marina Bay Marinas is located in the Bay of Gibraltar, immediately southwest of the Gibraltar Airport runway.

Visitors should be aware that older publications may still refer to Ocean Village Marina and Marina Bay Marina as separate facilities. Although historically operated independently, both now operate as a single marina under Ocean Village & Marina Bay Marinas. For local orientation, the marina is still commonly understood in two sections:

  • Marina Bay, north of the Sunborn Gibraltar Hotel
  • Ocean Village, south of the Sunborn Gibraltar Hotel

For general reference, the marina office is situated at 36°8’5” N, 5°22’5” W.

Identification and Landmarks

When approaching from the Bay of Gibraltar, the following features provide the clearest visual reference for locating Ocean Village & Marina Bay Marinas, listed from the outer approach towards the marina entrance:

  1. The northwest outer corner of North Mole
  2. The western end of the Gibraltar Airport runway, together with the metal structures carrying the airport approach lights extending seaward from it
  3. The Sunborn Gibraltar Hotel, a large floating hotel permanently berthed within the marina area, readily identifiable by its cruise-ship appearance and by its bow facing the marina entrance

When viewed from the Bay of Gibraltar, the Sunborn Gibraltar Hotel lies between the northwest outer corner of North Mole and the western end of the Gibraltar Airport runway.

The following aids to navigation are also relevant during the approach:

  • A single yellow quick-flashing marker buoy (“Aero Q.Y” on Admiralty charts) is located approximately 0.74 NM west of the airfield, marking the runway centreline extension
  • A green quick-flashing light (“Q.G.5M” on Admiralty charts) is exhibited from the northwest outer corner of North Mole

Final Approach

A useful initial reference when approaching from the Bay of Gibraltar is the yellow airport marker buoy. From this position, the principal landmarks of the marina area become easier to identify.

From the outer approach, vessels should shape a course towards a point approximately midway between the yellow airport marker buoy and the northwest outer corner of North Mole. This helps keep clear of traffic close to North Mole and improves visibility of any vessels departing the marina.

Once the Sunborn Gibraltar Hotel is clearly visible, vessels should continue the approach towards it. The marina entrance is reached once the northwest outer corner of North Mole has been left behind and the vessel is abeam of the western end of the Gibraltar Airport runway.

At the entrance, two access channels can be identified:

  • North channel, adjacent to the airport runway, leading to Marina Bay
  • South channel, leading to Ocean Village

During the final approach, fenders should be lowered close to the waterline, and speed should not exceed 5 knots.

Runway Warning

A runway warning light is located on the southwest outer corner of the Gibraltar Airport runway. When this light is flashing, an aircraft is landing or departing, and vessels must keep clear of the protected area extending west from the runway.

In such circumstances, vessels should remain as close as safely practicable to the southern side of the entrance approach area.

Vessels with an air draft exceeding 10 metres should remain clear of the marina entrance and wait further out in the bay until the warning light ceases.

Marina Arrival and Departure Procedure (Click on the image to enlarge)

  • When the indicator lights are flashing at the end of the runway this means that there is a plane about to take off or land.
  • For the safety of all, it is necessary to stay in the marina until the lights have stopped flashing.
  • The indicator lights are at the end of the runway and are clearly marked on the map.
  • All vessels with an air draft of 10m or less are permitted to depart providing they stay inside the south channel within the airport marker buoys and maintain their course.
  • There are very few daily flight arrivals and departures, these flight times can vary because as well as commercial flights, there are private jet and military plane arrivals and departures.
  • Sailing yacht Captains please be aware of the height restrictions when planning to leave the marina as many masts will cut the OLS.
  • Large sailing yachts, motor boats and Superyachts should contact the Gibraltar Port VTS on channel VHF 12 for clearance to enter the restricted zone.
  • If you have any queries regarding any of this information, please do not hesitate to contact us on tel: +350 20073300 or on VHF 71.

Arrival Communications

If a berth has been arranged in advance, visitors should update their ETA:

  1. 24 hours prior to arrival by telephone or email
  2. At least 1 hour prior to arrival by telephone or VHF

A further call should then be made from the marina entrance by telephone or VHF in order to receive final berthing instructions.

If no booking has been made, vessels should contact the marina from the entrance by VHF or telephone to enquire about availability and receive instructions.
